Life Skills (part 1)
Here are 10 basic skills that teens should know, good chance they don’t, and also a good reminder for everyone else!
Make your bed:
make sure your bottom sheet is tucked in on all sides
tuck your top sheet in at the bottom of the bed
straighten the top sheet to the top of the bed
fold the top 10 inches down
tuck the sides of the top sheet under the mattress
pull your cover over the top sheet
pillows at the top
best way to have something completed first thing in the morning
Thank you note:
here is a basic format:
Dear…, (1st sentence) Thank you for…
(2nd sentence) Personalize it about the item or your relationship with the person you are thanking
(3rd sentence) Thank the person again
Conclusion
Addressing an envelope:
Upper left corner of the envelope is for the return address
middle of envelope the person’s name the letter is going to, address underneath their name, city state zip code on the bottom line
stamp in the upper right corner
As for the person’s name the formality may need to be looked up
Changing batteries:
open up the battery housing
look at the size of the battery-batteries have numbers or letters naming them
once the old battery is out, look on the new battery AND the battery placement to match + with +
make sure the new battery is placed securely in place and replace housing
Using a screwdriver:
Identify the style of the screw head- the two most common are flat head or phillips, unless putting furniture together and I’m convinced they are mostly hex
turn the screwdriver either to tighten or loosen. -easy reminder is righty tighty, lefty loosy- turn right to make the screw tight and left to loosen the screw
Changing a light bulb:
turn the light light switch off
unscrew the previous light
look at the light socket size
look at the wattage- you are not supposed to use a bulb higher than the wattage suggested, but you can put a lower wattage bulb as a replacement
same as with a screw when you install a light- right to make it tight left to loosen
Put your items away:
what you take out to use, put away after using
use a plate? put it in the dishwasher
throw your garbage away- no one else should do it for you
be proud of your environment and respectful of others around you
Set your alarm:
make a point of getting up 5 minutes earlier than you need to
plan to be at places 5 min before your arrival time
Dress appropriately:
sweatpants, hoodies, and flannel pants are awesome… but they all have their place
going out for dinner? dress for the occasion
going on an interview? dress appropriately
brush your hair, clean off your face, and have confidence in yourself
Say please and thank you:
this one seems obvious, but it’s often forgotten about- USE MANNERS!!!
say please
say thank you
hold a door open for someone else
